In cinemas across the world, audiences would laugh along at the misfortunes of Jack Lemmon in The Apartment, cheer for Kirk Douglas in Spartacus and ride into Mexico with The Magnificent Seven. But they would also be watching from the very edges of their seats as the master of suspense himself unleashed a film that as well as being terrifying and horrific has also gone down as one of the truly great Hollywood motion pictures.
